SWIMMING - Leamington juniors create club history

LEAMINGTON Spa Amateur Swimming Club’s (LSASC) juniors won the Nuneaton and Bedworth Junior League Division One league title for the first time in the club’s history.

LSASC faced tough opposition in the final as they competed against former league winners City of Coventry, Boldmere Swim Club and Leicester Sharks as well as an in-form Nuneaton and Bedworth team and Braunstone.

However, the club’s junior swimmers showed outstanding team spirit and battled for every point as LSASC were crowned league champions for the first time.

Led by Head Coach Graham Nash, LSASC defied the odds to claim the title as team captains Ethan Gould and Olivia Taylor proudly received the trophy on behalf of the team.

Chairperson Karen Mee said: “This is an unbelievable achievement by the club, swimming against clubs significantly bigger than Leamington.

“It’s a true testament to the dedication and commitment of our teachers and coaches.

“Nearly all the swimmers have come through our Achievers scheme where the focus is on the development of technique and swimming skills.”

The team gala for boys and girls aged nine to 12-years-old is initially swam over three qualifying rounds, with the top six teams then competing in a regional final at Pingles Leisure Centre in Nuneaton.

And Leamington were unbeaten over the three qualifying rounds as the lead changed hands several times on the night of the final before LSASC, Coventry and Nuneaton and Bedworth pulled away from the opposition.

The young swimmers soaked up the electric atmosphere whilst the 11-year-old girls quartet of Florence Bradbury, Ellie Watson, Issey Cleary and Iona Forbes celebrated the outstanding achievement of remaining unbeaten in all of their relay races during the competition.

And the team will now head to the National Final at Corby International Pool in November where they will face junior teams from some of the top clubs in the country.
