Tight at the top in one-mile relay series

Leamington Editorial 30th Aug, 2019   0

JAMES Warren and Phil Houghton raced home to a joint-first placed finish in the 1-mile relays in the Handicap Series, during another busy week of action for the Spa Striders.

Leading the way for the 15-strong contingent of club runners at St Nicholas’ Park in Warwick, the pair triumphed in the third race of the series.

The result, however, was not enough to dislodge the top three of Paul Quinney, Euge McNally and Pete Teevan in the overall leaderboard.

In the BRAT Summerfield Smash 5k in Birmingham, Adam Notley recorded a personal best of just 16:38 to finish 14th overall, while Rob Egan finished 69th in a time of 19:52.

Gethryn Friswell (57:25) was the fastest club athlete in the Cotswold Lake 62 Evening Triathlon, finishing in 17th as the fifth-fastest lady, followed by Fiona Ferugson (59:30, 23rd) and Claire Westrope (1:11:36, 70th) in completing the course.

John-Paul Hunt was the only club member in action during the weekend, completing his first ultra-distance race at the 36-mile Dartmoor Crossing in 6:34:21 – enough to earn him an impressive finish of 12th.

Elsewhere, the Striders were also represented in the Ride Warwickshire Sportive, with Sandra Stokes, Jude Baum, Amanda Bonjour, Roz Cox and Ferguson all racing to the finish line in the 85-mile standard distance event.
