A PLAYER from Racing Club Warwick’s walking football team recently received a call-up to the England squad.
Graham Timms only joined Racing’s walking football team a few months ago.
The Whitnash resident has been playing in goal for Warwick’s over-55s men’s walking football team.
Despite Warwick not playing in a league, he received a call-up to play for England’s over-75 team at a walking football trial tournament at Evesham United.
He eventually earned a place in the squad as one of England’s goalkeepers.
Timms was awarded an England cap for being part of the squad for a friendly match against Guernsey.
He received a cap despite being unable to travel to Guernsey.
Timms has since played in regional tournaments against teams from all over the country.
He recently played in a tournament for England Central over 80s as an underage player.
Timms said: “It came as a big surprise when I was selected to take part in an England over 75s walking football tournament.
“Then I received a call to inform me that I had been selected for the squad as one of the goalkeepers.
“Unlike the other players who all play in leagues for different teams regularly, myself and all at our club were delighted to be recognised at international level.
“I have taken part in training sessions and matches already and have been informed that I am part of the squad and will in future be playing for England’s over 75 walking football team.
“It goes to show that age is no barrier.”
