Warwick struggle against league leaders

Leamington Editorial 5th Dec, 2017   0

HOCKEY: THERE was little joy for Warwick at the weekend as the men’s first and third team suffered defeats in their respective leagues.

The first team made the trip to table topping Boots.

Knowing a tough test awaited them, Warwick made the better start and dominated possession in the early parts of the game.

But a series of missed opportunities ensured the home side remained level, something which was to later cost Warwick dearly.

Boot scored twice on the counter attack before a simple third goal made the score 3-0 at half time.

Further chances came and went for Warwick as Boots added a further two goals to put the game beyond reach.

Not letting their heads drop though, Warwick scored three goals of their own in the closing moments to give the score a respectable edge.

Elsewhere the men’s third team lost 4-1 to Nottingham University.

Warwick started well by forcing the students back into their D and earning a short corner that Nick Baker drag flicked to get Warwick off the mark first.

But from there Notts pressed hard to equalise before half time while a second goal reversed Warwick’s one-goal lead at half time.

Warwick pressed back in the second half, creating several decent chances and a number of short corners – but no more goals came.

At the other end, Nottingham’s attacks were repelled many times by Warwick.

Pressure eventually told though as Nottingham scored a further two goals before the final whistle was blown.
