VICTORIES over Herefordshire and Somerset proved good preparation for Warwickshire Women ahead of their Middle England League decider with Oxfordshire.

The pairings of Sue Hornsby with Jenny Corn (both Lillington), and Lynne Innes (Stratford) with Aleen Shuttleworth (Stoke) were a highlight during the comprehensive 120-78 friendly victory over Herefordshire.

Played at Royal Leamington Spa Bowling Club, the highest-winning rink stormed to a 24-6 win, whilst Jacqui Cook (Lillington) with Joy Cook (Blossomfield), and Wendy Holloway (Welford) alongside Donna Kerr (RLS) also impressed in their 22-7 victory.

Elsewhere, Elaine Taylor with Helen Harris (both Stoke) and Brenda Beere with Heather Mills (both Grange Ladies) dominated after a slow start to win 23-12, while Maureen Edwards (Rugby Thornfield) and Pippa Mace, with Jayne Henfrey and Di Thurlbeck (all Lillington) ended up on the right side of a 19-15 scoreline.

Warwickshire narrowly lost two of their rinks, with Chris Cooke (Southam) and Janet Miller (Grange Ladies), and Liz Chedgzoy (Stratford) with Pat Gagg (Lillington) losing 17-14, and Janice White with Dawn Horne (both RLS), with Sharon Keal (Snitterfield) and Joan Hall (Nuneaton) being defeated 21-18.

Meanwhile, in the prior fixture against Somerset in Burnham-on-Sea, a single shot proved the difference as Warwickshire bowled their way to an 86-85 victory.

Taylor and Wilkinson, with Antoinette Lambert (Ambleside) and Sigrid Thomas (Rugby Thornfield) claimed the biggest margin of victory during the encounter, finishing 19-10 winners.

Elsewhere, Edwards with Hazel Goodman (Lillington), and Mo Yeomans (Blossomfield) and Heather Tredgold (Southam) were pegged back by their opponents after leading 7-0, but still ran out 17-11 victors.

Warwickshire now head into their final fixture of the MEL on Tuesday against Oxfordshire knowing that a victory will confirm their status as MEL winners.
